About this event

The International Symposium on Online Journalism announced the cancellation of the in-person component of the 2020 event due to the growing threat of the new coronavirus.

In accordance with the conference and the city of Austin's directive, we are cancelling this hackathon as well. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Calling all developers, designers, researchers, journalists, political junkies and more. On Thursday, April 23, The Texas Tribune, Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and Hacks/Hackers will host a hackathon centered on building tools to inform and educate voters. The theme is intentionally broad: Participants are encouraged to work on anything aimed at fostering engagement in an election year. Explicitly partisan projects are not allowed.

If you already have an idea and people you'd like to work with, you're welcome to arrive and start working right away. But if you're missing an idea or are attending solo, don't worry: We'll have pitch sessions, team formation and a list of potential projects on standby.

After a day of collaboration and coding, your team will present its tool or concept to a panel of judges. Come for the chance to win our grand prize, but stay for the company of others at the intersection of news and technology. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and an evening happy hour are provided.

The hackathon is being held in timing with the Knight Center's International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), which will take place April 24-25 at the University of Texas. Those interested in registering for the hackathon are welcome to register for ISOJ as well.
